Setting up a cabbage farm

We often get questions from people who want to grow cabbages but do not know where to start. On this post we try to elaborate some key factors and steps to follow that we think would be of great help to any farmer.

At the end of the article leave us a comment to let us know if you found this helpful and suggest topics you would want us to discuss. We would love to hear from you.

Climatic Conditions

Cabbage is a cool season crop. The optimum temperature range for cabbage production is 15 to 20°C. Above 25°C growth stops. The minimum temperature is 0°C (freezing), but cold hardened plants can tolerate temperatures as low as -10°C.

Young plants less than six millimetres in diameter can tolerate both colder and warmer temperatures than older plants. These young plants are said to be in the juvenile phase of growth. Plants which have matured past the juvenile phase will flower if temperatures are less than 10°C for five to six weeks.

Cabbage Nursery

A cabbage nursery bed is supposed to be in a shade and should have no hard pieces of soil. Mix a bit of organic manure in the fine soil and let it settle for two or three weeks before planting the seeds.

When planting the cabbage, especially for those in frost prone areas, ensure that you sow the seeds at least 4 weeks before the expected frost date. Sow these seeds at ¼ inch deep, and 2 inches apart in a well-covered/protected space, preferably indoors.

The seeds should be gently cast over the soil and then lightly covered with more soil and left under the shade until the seeds germinate after some 10 or more days.

As the seedlings grow, gradually expose them to sunlight. The watering of the garden should also gradually be reduced to prepare the seedlings for the rough conditions of the vegetable field under direct sunlight.

As the seedlings mature and get to about two or three inches they may be generously watered so that the soil gets soft to allow gentle and smooth uprooting of the seedlings for onward transplantation on the garden or farm.

So these are a few things when starting out but there is much more to cabbage farming. If you need to know more, let us know by leaving a comment or sending us a message.

All the best in you cabbage farming venture!!
